Section 22 -  Optimizing for Yahoo: The Next Big Thing

1. Optimizing for Yahoo: The Next Big Thing

Yahoo broke its tie with Google in February 2004. With this snap of the tie, Yahoo becomes one of the major contender against Google in the search market. Yahoo has already attracted a major portion of Google users.

This also implies that good placing in Yahoo SERPs is to be specifically earned and it is not going to come with the same Google package.

  The New Scenario

Though it means that you have to pay special attention to Yahoo optimization, the good news is that Yahoo has not made any drastic departure from the Google algorithm. All that you have to do is to fine tune your Google optimization to suit Yahoo algorithm.

2. Optimizing for Yahoo: The Next Big Thing - Yahoo and Google SERPs: Keywords and Link Text

It might be true that the Yahoo/Inktomi algorithm has not made any major departure in its algorithm, one cannot say that you will be able to survive completely on Google algorithm. To be successful in Yahoo, you need to know the differences between the two algorithms. One should know what works with Yahoo and what doesn't work with it.

Keyword Density

With regard to Yahoo, keyword density seems to be playing a greater role when compared with Google. Careful analysis shows that in Yahoo, pages with high keyword density in the body text and as page titles, secure high-ranking. Average keyword density for Yahoo is approximated to 9-10%.

Title - 15 to 20%.

Body Text - 2.5-3%

Meta Tags> - 2-3%

Keywords in the Link Text

Link anchor text plays a significant role in Yahoo. But when compared to Google, Yahoo does not place such great importance on link anchor text. In Yahoo good link anchor text should be supported by, strong keywords in title and body text.

3. Optimizing for Yahoo: The Next Big Thing - Yahoo and Google SERPs: Subpages, Main Domain

Sub-pages vs. Main Domain

Some SEO professionals still find it a mystery to see their page not featuring in the top SERPs for a certain keyword even after perfect optimization through proper link text and other advanced techniques, while at the same time, the inner pages of the same domain secure high rank and good placing within the first 20 positions.

To understand this one should understand the inner dynamics. The search engine algorithm segregates the pages with highest number of links pointing to them with proper link text. Secondly, the keyword density in the title and body text is checked and the pages lagging behind are filtered out. If the keyword density satisfies the criteria or excels among the other pages, then the page secures a rank in line with the links. On failure, the spider locates another internal page of the same domain even though it may not have been optimized with inter or external link text, but having the sufficient keyword density in body text and title to entice Yahoo.

Conclusion

The best way to sore high in Yahoo optimization is to get abundant backlinks with proper link text and to stuff the recipient page with high keyword density especially in the body text, titles and alt tags.
